Florida Senator Shevrin Jones (SD-34, Miami Gardens) released the following statement on the passing of Mayor Shirley Gibson, the first Mayor of Miami Gardens:
Mayor Shirley Gibson was a trailblazer as one of the founding leaders of Miami Gardens, the largest Black-majority community in the State of Florida.
She worked tirelessly for the people as a dedicated public servant throughout her life, first keeping residents safe as a longtime law enforcement officer, and later helping build a community that we can all be proud of. She was a champion for small businesses, infrastructure, and put Miami Gardens on the map
