Tropical Storm Idalia intensified Monday as it neared Cuba with forecasters predicting it would grow into a Category 3 major hurricane before striking Florida this week, the National Hurricane Center said.
“Idalia is now forecast to become a major hurricane before it reaches the Gulf coast of Florida,” said NHC senior hurricane specialist Eric Blake. “The risk continues to increase for life-threatening storm surge and dangerous hurricane-force winds along portions of the west coast of Florida and the Florida
Panhandle beginning as early as late Tuesday.”
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 33 counties on Sunday
