The best legislature corporations can buy?

It’s no secret that Governor DeSantis and his allies in the Florida Legislature are putting corporate greed ahead of what’s best for Florida families. Since taking office, the governor has signed off on over $5.7 billion in corporate giveaways, which is more than six times what the state of Florida has spent on making housing affordable.

Our allies at Florida for All produced a Corporate Greed Report, which shows that the Florida Legislature with their current leadership is “the best state legislature money can buy,” benefiting corporate donors at the expense of everyday Floridians.

While Governor DeSantis and his legislative allies tried to distract and divide Floridians by fighting culture wars against non-existent problems, most of the recent legislative session was spent giving out corporate tax breaks and passing bills that help corporations further pad their profits at the expense of everyday Floridians.

Some key findings in the report:

  • Corporate donors like Florida Crystals and U.S. Sugar; Florida Power & Light, HCA Healthcare, Walt Disney World, Florida Blue, Geo Group, Wal-Mart, and developers like The Vestcor Companies, among dozens of others, all benefited from the passage of priority legislation at the expense of Florida consumers.
  • The Florida Legislature ensured passage of several permanent tax breaks and budget earmarks benefiting corporate donors, while failing to invest in affordable housing, childcare, mass transit, and other critical community programs and infrastructure needs.
  • The Florida Legislature voted down a proposal to close corporate tax loopholes exploited by multinational companies, siding with big-business front groups which have given millions to DeSantis and his legislative allies, costing Floridians $500 million a year.
  • Governor DeSantis and his allies did the bidding of wealthy corporate donors by killing dozens of policy proposals to solve Florida’s skyrocketing rents, property insurance hikes, and broken unemployment system.
  • While our state’s housing crisis has gotten worse, millions still don’t have access to affordable health care. The Republican leadership of the Florida Legislature continues to put the needs of their corporate donors ahead of the people they were elected to serve.

We need leadership that will fight for every Floridian, no matter what we look like or where we come from, and not put the record profits of the largest corporations first.
