LEE COUNTY, Fla.– March 29 marks Manatee Appreciation Day. Celebrated the last Wednesday of March, Manatee Appreciation Day is an opportunity to draw awareness on how to help protect the species. The day was created by the Save the Manatee Club, a leading manatee conservation organization. Songwriter Jimmy Buffet and former U.S. Senator Bob Graham launched the organization in 1981 to protect manatees and their aquatic habitat. According to National Today, Manatee Appreciation Day was created to back the Save the Manatee Club’s mission of rescuing manatees from human activities.
